I've not done a book post for quite a long time, so I thought I'd just share some of Lil J's current reads. We read lots of board books since he's still pretty rough with the pages of regular books, and here are five of his favourites:
:: Where is the Green Sheep?, by Mem Fox: This is a quirky book that introduces the reader to different "types" of sheep, while looking for that elusive green sheep. On the way, kids get to learn about colours and opposites.
:: The Very Quiet Cricket, by Eric Carle: Ok, the boy is quite a fan of Mr Carle's works (after all, which kid hasn't read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" before?), and this is one of his favourites. While some titles may be a little more complex for a two year old (like Mister Seahorse, or Walter the Baker), this book is simple enough for Lil J to understand. He loves chanting "But nothing happened, not a sound", while looking at the various insects that appear in the story.
:: Eating the Alphabet, by Lois Ehlert: We've read quite a few of Ehlert's books to the boy, and we love her simple colourful illustrations. Lil J loves this book since he can point out familiar vegetables and fruits, and we get to sneak in a little learning for his ABCs.
:: Charley Harper ABCs, by Charley Harper: I'm a big fan of Charley Harper's illustrations, and this has been our main "textbook" for teaching the alphabet for both the boys. After all, its great to be able to kill two birds with one stone, and introduce both art and ABCs at the same time!
:: Goodnight Gorilla, by Peggy Rathmann: Both boys simply love animals, and this wordless book about the zoo animals following the zoo-keeper home at night never fails to amuse them!
What are your favourite board book titles?

Hey thank you for sharing this! Nice suggestions, will put them on my list when we next visit the library! Calla mostly listens in when Poppy and I read. Poor baby :(
ReplyDeleteAt least she listens! Most days the lil one runs off when I read to the big boy, but now he sits down to listen if we pull out these titles, plus koko also sits in haha!
DeleteWe love yr #1 too! It's so easy for pre-readers to pretend they Can read by following the pictures haha. Both my kids did that...
ReplyDeleteAnother favourite of mine is My Picture Prayers. Gonna blog abt it soon!
Just saw your post! Thanks for sharing the title, it looks like a great book!
