The kids love playing with tangrams. They like tinkering with their magnetic tangram sets, and we have a travel set that comes in really handy for long car rides during overseas trips. Tangrams are pretty amazing: with just some simple shapes, you can form all kinds of figures, from dogs to houses to boats! Not only do tangrams encourage creativity, playing with them may actually help to improve spatial and mathematical skills.
Anyway, I was quite intrigued when we were offered to review the Tangram Tee from Fabricate.sg, which allows kids to design their own T-shirts with the use of alphabets and tangram shapes. The concept is simple, but clever, since you can form all sorts of phrases, and figures, and wear them... and you can change them out anytime you want!

These T-shirts are priced at $29, and come in four colours (as shown above), and are made of soft 190 gm cotton. I liked how the T-shirts felt, soft, and not too thin, so they would probably wear well even after many washes (Yes, I know I sound like an aunty housewife, but I really dislike those tees that are so thin they go out of shape after three to four washes!). These are machine-washable (a very important criteria for me!), and can be tumble dried. The tees come in three sizes, which are probably more suitable for slightly older kids from three plus and up. Lil J is four (but rather small for his age), and even size S was a tad too big for him. Junior J (who is coming to 7, but also a small skinny kid) fits the size M nicely, so I would assume that the size L would be great for those aged seven to ten years old.
Each tee comes with a tangram set of seven shapes (in black colour) that can be stuck onto the T-shirt. You can also purchase alphabet sets at $8 each, and those come in either black, or pink with silver glitter. Do note that the alphabets and shapes must be removed before the tee is washed.
The boys got busy with their tees immediately upon receiving them. Lil J wasn't too interested in the shapes, and only wanted to stick his name on the tee, followed by some random alphabets and the word "zoo" (which is the only thing he can spell now aside from his name). He loved the pink alphabets, but my only grouse is that some of the glitter does come off, so that can be annoying if you don't like finding glitter here and there.
Junior J immediately decided he wanted to for a dinosaur from the tangram shapes, and made a "Roar" word to go with it (very typical of him!). He had a good time planning his design, and he found it easier to form his figure on the table instead of on the tee. The shapes adhere pretty strongly to the tee, so it is hard to shuffle the shapes around once they are stuck down. But that means the letters and shapes do stay on, and the designs stayed intact even after a whole day of activities. You don't need to worry about stuff dropping off and going missing!
All in all, I think these tees would make pretty cool gifts, and are quite a fun addition to the wardrobe. They'll be great for parties too if you're looking for customized designs, and I think they are exploring the option of providing these tees for party packs.
