Thinking Thursdays: Rainforest play scene

We've been reading Eric Carle's "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly," Said the Sloth", to complement what we've been learning about the rainforest. We love his illustrations, and I couldn't resist scanning in the last two pages of the book, laminating and cutting out the animals that were featured in the book.

I cut out trees from cardboard packaging (gosh, we have so many of these!), and Junior J then painted them in varying shades of green that he mixed himself. We stuck them up on the wall, according to the four layers of the rainforest, stuck the labels for the layers on, and then proceeded to figure out which layers did the animals belong to.

Sorting the animals was quite an interesting process, and we had to think about whether the animals could climb trees! We ended up referring constantly to the "Rain Forests" book by Nancy Levinson, which I highly recommend, as the pages of the book are just bursting with flora and fauna. Another great point about the book is that it covers both the tropical and temperate rainforests.

Our little poison dart frog.
I helped Junior J to cut out the tree trunks and added some wood grain to them.

Here's the anaconda peeking out from behind the tree!

I'm thinking of printing out more animals for this play scene, and getting Junior J to add them in the "hidden" compartments in some of the trees (these were just book packaging where I left the flaps intact). We'll see how that goes!

PS: We've shared our list of favourite reads about rainforests over here!
