{Small Spaces} A playful parent's blackboard wall

Hello! If you are a parent like us, you probably would have spent a fair bit of time doing up your child's room or play space. There's plenty of inspiration all over the internet for children's spaces. However, I thought it would be fun to take a peek into kid spaces in Singapore, which you hardly see on design blogs or sites, so I've invited our mum bloggers to share their children's spaces with us. Over the next two and a half weeks, we'll be visiting various small spaces for petite people, and I hope you'll enjoy the tour!

Today, Sarah will be sharing her boys' play space. According to her, she runs a full-fledged domestic circus where she juggles her multiple roles as mom, wife, teacher, writer and edupreneur. The three males in her life keep her hands busy and heart full. Whenever sanity and time permits, she can be found at The Playful Parents. Join her in her impossibly playful missions if you believe that parenting and life ought to be full of joy!

How many moms would love for their kids to draw on their nice, white wall? Well, much as I am a fan of mess for memories, I'm not that progressive. But since, apparently drawing on walls is something kids will do at some point in time anyway. I thought, "Why not give them legitimate wall space for creative expression?" We started with one - a white one - when we moved back to Singapore, back into our home. It was a large 4 by 3 feet whiteboard. The kids, and all other little kids, loved it. I loved it so much but I still had an unfulfilled dream - a BIG, BAD BLACKBOARD! With not much wall space left, the only place left was the corridor at our entrance. After much hard and dusty work by husband, sanding and priming the surface, he slapped on the black Ronseal blackboard paint. And voila - our long 'blackwall' - all 8 by 2.5 feet of black goodness ! Our boys just went colour happy.

An inviting canvas for storytelling by my boys.
Lee drew up an elaborate recollection of our Taipei travels from two years ago.

Little Zee gets creative and uses available resources as art - Slipper stamping.
I know, "Ewk!" Ah well... that's me, Germy Mom.

It's always important for every story to have characters. Guess who Lee is drawing?

A priceless masterpiece - Our family portrait by Lee.

Only thing now is, well we shouldn't have used those liquid chalk markers with super duper staying powers. Good, old-fashioned chalk would have been dusty but not so difficult to clean. But the nice bit about that 'staining' is I've got a beautiful masterpiece to welcome us home everyday.

  2. Wow, that is some blackboard you've got Sarah! I'm paranoid about the chalk and would not attempt this in my place. We do have a couple of whiteboards around for Sophie to doodle on but the look of a blackboard has it's own charm too.

  3. Wow!! I was planning to have a blackboard wall at home as well but was worried about all the chalk dust that would accumulate and cause a cleaning and health problem, but looking at yours makes me want it even more:))
