Thinking Thursdays: Learning about the seasons

Hi there!  Am back to share some of the activities we've been doing to explore the seasons (with a focus on spring).  So aside from those spring-related crafts that I shared, here's what we've been up to:

:: We bought a herb kit from Ikea which came with soil pods and 3 types of seeds and planted them:

:: Read (or reread) a whole load of books relating to the seasons:
- "In the Town, All Year Round", by Rotraut Susanne Berner, which is a huge picture book that covers several areas in town through all 4 seasons.  The book is a feast for the eyes, and Junior J loved pouring over the illustrations.

- The "Nature Up Close Series" by John Himmelman has some of our favourite books on life cycles, like those on the luna moth and ladybug:

- "Planting a Rainbow", as well as "Eating the Alphabet" by Lois Ehlert (even Baby J was attracted by the colours!):

- "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle:

:: We also stuck up a seasonality chart on his cardboard fridge and have been peering at the seasonal produce at the farmer's market (right now, its the tail end of the asparagus season, and the strawberries are out in full force!):

:: And finally, we've been counting ladybugs using these flashcards .  Junior J hasn't been fond of numbers, and keeps missing out "15" when he counts.  Every time we gently correct him, he freezes up and gives up.  But these days he's a little more interested to learn, so we've been trying to catch up on his math!

How about you?  Any spring-time activities to share?

PS: I'm guest-blogging over at "The Bottomsup Blog" today, and sharing some photography tips... do hop over here to read the post!

  1. I am thinking of planting herbs too! Nothing to do with seasons but just wanna have some home grown items in my dishes. Will be damn proud of myself if I succeed. Is there any instruction on the IKEA packets on how to plant them?

As for learning seasons, probably I'm not creative enough. I can only think of planting seeds and watching them grow. In Singapore there's no distinct seasons and I fins that most of the information we received are from books. If you can bring little one to tour the 4 seasons, it will be a great experience for them. Otherwise, the next best thing I can think of is getting some videos featuring seasons.

  2. Lilium: Having home-grown herbs is great! :) The Ikea kit came with everything: 3 cups with the name of the herbs on them, the soil pods (it was fun adding water and seeing them expand) and the seed packets. But this was in Germany so I'm not sure if the SG Ikea has it. If not I'm sure you could get seed packs from Far East Flora?

You could try Pinterest for learning activities/crafts on the seasons... seed planting is a great start, and yes, there are loads of good books out there! :)

  3. Wow! That sounds very simple to grow! Unfortunately Ikea Singapore doesn't carry this. I've made the query this morning.
I'll check out some other florist or nurseries. I'm looking for mint seeds and chives seeds.
Pinterest is great! Thanks for the recommendations!

  4. Lilium: No prob! Hope you'll find your seeds! If not try buying the fresh herbs and then put them in water so that they grow roots, then you can pot them after! That's what we did for our mint! :)
