Thinking Thursdays: More great Chinese reads... (and a giveaway!)

Hello! We've been reading more Chinese books from Flip for Joy while travelling (see, we're really trying hard to include Chinese books in our reading diet!). Here are some titles that we've enjoyed recently:

:: 交通工具捉迷藏 (Under Fresh Flips): This is a board book from Japan (Yay for more board books!), and like those that we shared previously, these had cut-outs. However, this book came with one more fun element: you are given clues to guess the vehicle that is hidden on the next page, and then you can flip over to see how the cut-out transforms into the answer. Really fun for kids, especially those who love their trucks and other things that move. Plus it also teaches the colours and the name of vehicles in both English and Chinese!

:: 点点点 (Under Flip for Fun): A Chinese translation of the French title "Press Here" by Hervé Tullet,  this was Junior J's favourite book of the lot. Readers are instructed to press/touch/shake/tilt the dots in the book, and then flip the page to see what happens. It's like playing with an iPhone app, but a little more old-school, and just as fun. The book had the boys (yes, even baby had a go at it, pressing the dots with an accompanying "DI!" sound) pressing, shaking, and puffing away, and Junior J also got his dinosaur to join in the fun!

:: 青蛙弗洛格的成长故事 (Under Flip for Love): This series (of 12 books) is a translation of a Dutch series by award-winning illustrator Max Velthuijs. The books follow Frog and his friends on adventures, as he learns how to appreciate and celebrate life and overcome obstacles. The six books that we read managed to engage Junior J, and also gently introduced topics such as death to him.

We really enjoyed those books, and you can see the other titles that we read over at this post. Now for some exciting news... Flip for Joy is generously giving away TWO $30 e-gift cards to their store to readers of this blog! These cards are valid for 6 months. To enter in this giveaway, you would just have to carry out all the following steps:

3. Leave a comment in this post, sharing a title of a book you would like to get from Flip for Joy if you win. Please also leave your email address so that we can contact you if you win!

For an extra chance of winning, share this post on your own Facebook page, and tag both Flip for Joy and Mum in the Making so that we can see the post. Giveaway ends 2nd December, Sunday, 12 midnight, Singapore time. All the best!

Oh yes, Flip for Joy will also be pledging a $5 donation to Children's Cancer Foundation Singapore for every order made in December, so it'll be a great time to purchase gifts for friends or your own kids. In addition, they will be having a "12 days of Christmas giveaways" from December 1st to 12th. One lucky customer who has made a purchase that day will be randomly picked and he/she will win a free book from Flip for Joy (see the titles below!). So that's 12 great titles to be given away to 12 winners!

All the best for the giveaway, and start clicking and get flipping!

Update: Congrats Dana's Mommy & Aiyen! You'll be shopping for Chinese books soon!

[Disclaimer: We received the books above from Flip for Joy for review purposes. All opinions are my own.]

  3. Would love to win 青蛙弗洛格的成长故事. Keen to read how the book introduces the concept of death gently to young minds and hearts, given that my boys just lost their grandad.

    1. Carol, so sorry to hear about your loss. Hope you and the boys are ok? One of the Frog books had Frog finding a dead bird, and thinking about life and death, so I guess that helps as a springboard for discussing the topic with kids. Take care!
