Thankful Tuesdays: The unexpected

I've always been a stickler for routines and lists.  I like to know what I'm in for.  I'd be the type that will plan things down to the smallest detail.  The hubby says it borders on obsession sometimes.  He, on the other hand, likes to leave things flexible, to the point that he doesn't keep track of what he needs to do and sometimes forgets or mixes up his appointments.

Suffice to say, we do get on each other's nerves sometimes.  And my need for orderliness sometimes means I don't deal with changes very well.  Like packing up and moving in less than 2 months.  And what's more, with the possibility that we may have to camp in a hotel and hunt for a place to rent, while dealing with 2 jet-lagged kids.  Plus having to find all our living essentials, since most rental apartments apparently come unfurnished... while dealing with a language barrier.  Oh my.

However, in the midst of freaking out... there has been a still small voice telling me things will be alright.  And as I read older entries on this blog, I am reminded of how God has bestowed so much grace upon us, and has seen us through so much.  Like the time we had to drive 8 hours back to Singapore with a sick kid to get him to the hospital.  Or the trip to Yunnan with a 9 month old in tow.  Perhaps all unexpected events are there to remind us that we are not in control, but God is.  If all of life is cut and dried, and easy peasy, would we still find the need to look to God?

So today, I am thankful for the unexpected.  For these show me that I really need His grace and mercy.  And these make life the roller coaster ride that it is... with the lows, and the necessary toil of climbing, that allow us to experience the highs.

I am also thankful for unexpectedness that brings a smile to my face:

:: The toddler who is extremely fussy about his protein sources, but will happily eat raw greens:

:: Surprise thoughtful presents in the mail, tied with ribbons the colour of the rainbow:

Thank you, D!  I really loved it!

:: Odd little constructions chanced upon at home:

This is Triclops.  He's a mutant Trunky who has snatched an eye from an octopus.
He's been tied up by the boy, perhaps to ensure he does not run amok!

:: Baby toys that remind me of rainbows and God's promises:

:: Random snuggle sessions with the brothers:

"We snuggle under the blanket.  Baby J is called pull-ey, and I'm called squirmy!"

:: Baby cuddliness in new clothes:

:: The bright cheery colors and myriad of shapes and textures at the playground:

  3. This last year I've learned to trust in the process of life. Sometimes you have no choice, so the best you can do is relax...
I don't make lists, I don't keep everything perfect at home (it's almost impossible when there's a two year old playing and dancing around) but I also have my strong structures about how things should be done. I was WRONG. I had everything under control and life showed me that sometimes hapiness and wisdom come from other places. Maybe it's all there, in that path where nobody knows what to do and how to do it. TRUST the present, the things that happen when you make choices and do the best you can with what's there in that special moment. If the kids are tired and you are thirsty and sleepy and you don't understand a word in german, smile, relax, buy sandwiches and milk, have a glass of wine with your hubby and celebrate the moment. Watch out, life may surprise you! :0) (By the way, It's great to learn another language specially for your kids, I know that for personal reasons, and I can assure you, it will change the way they see and think. You are giving them the chance to have different logics and points of view, apart from the linguistic area) GOOD FOR YOU! and for THEM!

  4. I'm so glad you liked it! Hang in there, dearie :) I know it is easy to say, and it sounds often trite, but God really is good, and really, He does want what is good for us. You're going through a difficult time, but keep that chin up, and it will be beautiful in the end. Wait, and trust, and see :)
